Royalist campaign for fourth plinth statue in honour of Queen Elizabeth II

Outline

On 19 February 2024, The Royalists launched a campaign to honour our late Queen with a permanent statue on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square.

Why the fourth plinth?

Trafalgar Square would provide an ideal setting to honour this extraordinary reign, not only due to its status as a symbol of national pride but also because it serves as an important link between London's major tourist thoroughfares. Millions traverse from afar to visit Trafalgar Square to admire its built environment, but also because it is a crossroads for Whitehall, The Mall, and Charing Cross Road. Placing a statue of Queen Elizabeth II on the fourth plinth would provide tourists and residents alike with a poignant reminder of the late Queen and her enormous contribution to the rich tapestry of our nation's history.

Responses:

The campaign has garnered attention from prominent media outlets including the Daily Express, the Daily Mail, and the BBC. Concurrently, the petition, launched in tandem with the campaign, has amassed over 50,000 signatures and received endorsements from over 400 donors. Andrew Rosindell MP, serving as the Honorary President of The Royalists, offered his remarks to BBC Radio:

“This is Trafalgar Square, this is the heart of our capital. It’s where everybody comes to. And there is someone who has served our country so well for so long, more than anyone else in our lifetime and that is Her Late Majesty The Queen. There couldn’t be a better location for a statue in her honour than Trafalgar Square.

I don’t believe the Mayor of London should have control of the plinth or control of Trafalgar Square. I think he is an intensely political person and quite a divisive individual and he makes decisions based on his own perceptions of things. I want to have symbols in our capital that represent everybody.”
